We find in all types of foods many nutrients which make a big difference in the global nourishment of the living organism. Be it for humans, dogs, cats or other animals, these nutrients help the living metabolism. But what are the different types of nutrients and what are they used for in a diet specifically made for animals?

Proteins

Proteins play a major part in the animal organism. They are macronutrients responsible for giving energy to the animal’s body throughout the day. We find them in cells, bones, muscles, skin and fur. They are thus essential to animal food, since they are responsible for maintaining cells and organs, but also help maintain a healthy metabolism and reinforce the immune system. A low protein ratio could lead to a lack in methionine and lysine, which could in turn lead to various health issues.

We find proteins in multiple forms:

  • Fresh meat (chicken, duck, lamb)

  • Rice

  • Fish

  • Corn

  • Peas

  • Potatoes

  • Etc.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates play two major roles in the animal organism. First, they act as a source of quick energy in our furry friend’s body. Second, they help regulate the intestinal transit. We can find carbohydrates in many ingredients such as rice, wheat, corn, potato, tapioca, etc.

Fats

Fats (omega 3, 6 and 9) help maintain an animal’s general health. They help keep a shiny coat.

Here are some ingredients containing a good amount of fats:

  • Chicken fat

  • Fish oil

  • Soy oil

  • Canola oil

  • Etc.

Vitamines

Vitamins have an important function in preventing and resisting various diseases. They also help maintain an optimal metabolism. In other words, they act as a natural barrier for the living organism.

There are two types of vitamins:

Fat-soluble (which are absorbed by fat)

  • Vitamin A: They are used by the reproductive system. They help with a healthy skin and beatiful fur. Vitamin A also ensure a good vision.
  • Vitamin D: They contribute to calcium absorption.
  • Vitamin E: They are also used by the reproductive system.
  • Vitamin K: They ensure blood coagulation.

Hydro-soluble (which are absorbed by water)

  • Vitamin C: They help with disease prevention.
  • Vitamin B: They help with a healthy growth and the nervous system.

Minerals

Minerals are elements responsible with the development of bones, regularization of the enzymes, nutriment transfer and electrolyte balance.

We can find them under the following terms:

  • Iodine

  • Selenium

  • Manganese

  • Iron

  • Zinc

Probiotics

Most commonly known as beneficial bacteria, probiotics help limit the proliferation of bad bacteria and help with intestinal health. They are strongly recommended for animals, especially older or sick animals.

We can conclude that to have a healthy animal, it requires a diet well adapted to its needs which contains all those nutrients!
